55+ Years of Music, Food & Culture

Festival Mexicano has run every September since 1969, making it one of the longest-running cultural festivals in West Michigan. What started as a small community gathering has grown into a three-day celebration at Calder Plaza in downtown Grand Rapids that draws over 30,000 visitors each year.

Organized by the Mexican Heritage Association of West Michigan (MHAWM), the festival showcases the richness of Mexican culture through live music, traditional dance, authentic food from 20+ vendors, an artisan market, and family-friendly activities.

What to Expect

Music & Dance

Mariachi, folkórico, cumbia, and a DJ set Saturday night. Traditional and modern, all weekend.

20+ Food Vendors

Tacos, enchiladas, tamales, churros, elote, agua fresca. Award-winning vendors from across West Michigan.

Arts & Culture

Artisan market, craft demonstrations, cultural presentations, and art displays throughout the plaza.

Family Activities

Games, face painting, piñatas, and kids' workshops all three days. Bring everyone.

Reinitas Mexicanas at the Festival

Each year, young girls of Mexican descent earn the honor of representing Mexican heritage at Festival Mexicano. You’ll see our Reinitas throughout the weekend — in traditional attire, at ceremonies, alongside the Grito, and leading moments of cultural celebration. Four age categories (Pequeña, Joven, Adolescente, Señorita) ensure every girl has her moment on stage.

Crowned each June after a cultural presentation program, our Reinitas are ambassadors for Mexican heritage year-round — visible, trained, and proud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an admission fee?
No — Festival Mexicano is completely free to attend all three days. No tickets or registration required. Just show up and enjoy.
Where do I park?
Street parking is available throughout downtown Grand Rapids. The closest parking ramp is at DeVos Place on Monroe Avenue, about a two-minute walk from the plaza. The Ottawa/Fulton ramp and Dash Lot are also nearby. We encourage carpooling or using the Rapid bus line (routes stop within a block of Calder Plaza).
Is the festival accessible?
Yes. Calder Plaza is fully wheelchair accessible with paved walkways and ADA-compliant restrooms. If you need specific accommodations, reach out to us at info@mhawm.org and we'll do our best to help.
What kind of food is available?
Over 20 food vendors serve a wide range of Mexican dishes — tacos, enchiladas, tamales, elote, churros, agua fresca, and more. Vegetarian options are available at several vendors. No outside food or beverages are permitted in the festival grounds.
What happens if it rains?
Festival Mexicano is a rain-or-shine event. Some areas of the plaza have covered spaces, and we set up tents over the main food court and seating areas. In the event of severe weather (lightning, high winds), we may temporarily pause activities for safety. Follow our social media pages for real-time updates.
Can I bring my kids?
Absolutely. Festival Mexicano is a family event. We have a dedicated kids' area with games, face painting, piñatas, and craft workshops all three days. Strollers are welcome throughout the plaza.
Can I leave and come back?
Yes. Re-entry is allowed throughout the day, so you can step out for a walk, run back to your car, or take a break and return whenever you like.
Is alcohol available?
Yes. Beer and other beverages are available at designated areas inside the festival. Admission to Festival Mexicano itself is free, but alcohol purchases require drink tickets and valid ID (21+). Drink tickets are sold on-site.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes — well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome at Festival Mexicano. Please bring water for your dog and keep in mind the plaza can get crowded and loud with music and large crowds. Service animals are always welcome.
